Is reading the sociology NCERT important for the general studies paper in CSE preparation?
Yes it is important for a basic knowledge.. As sociology is the study of society.. The knowledge you will get from ncert is basic and it will be helpful not only in general studies but also for essay writing aswell. But one thing to keep in mind that while studying sociology you need to understand the thing in a technical way rather than using commonsense as commonsense in sociology can lead to misconception and difficulty in understanding..
Do I need to read any book other than NCERTs (the four sociology books of classes 11 and 12) for preparing for Sociology (optional) for UPSC CSE?
Well NCERTs are nothing if you are opting for sociology optional . Syllabus is very vast so i am discussing my strategy . I hope it helps.
Well i spend my 2 and half months for preparing sociology optionals .
So here are some guidelines :
- First go through syllabus thoroughly .
- Books which i purchased are : Sociology by M.Haralamboss and Holborn ( big blue book) , Sociology by Anthony giddens, Society in India by Ram Ahuja , Modernization of Indian tradition by Yogendra Singh , Ignou sociology notes of BA and MA and Ncert of 11th and 12th.
- Instead of studying books i would suggest take chapter from syllabus and research on them from these books and then make your notes because haralombass book is not easy to read .
- Download previous year question papers.
Note : Sociology is very interesting subject dont try to cram the concepts . Its that kind of subject where one will be in favor and 100 will be criticizing .So you have to follow middle path .

sociology optional syllabus for upsc
What will be the best way to prepare for ‘sociology’ for civil services?
Sociology optional paper comprises of two papers;
Paper 1 deals with the static part which brings in the thinkers who laid foundation to the present Sociology while Paper 2 deals with the application of those theories into Indian system along with the theories of the Indian Sociologists as well.
Paper 1, the major chunk has to do with the five thinkers, and the best source according to me would be Ritzer or UIAS notes which I believe are available on the internet. The rest of the parts in paper 1 have their occurrences in books by Harlamboss and also Bottomore (the first three chapters, though the language is a bit difficult).
For paper-2 which deals with the current issues relating to India with an understanding of the past moorings, has not a specific book as such. Because the dynamics are mostly left uncovered. Though, help could be taken from the internet, or any coaching institute notes for static dimensions in case browsing the internet is difficult, or books such as the ones written by Y.Singh.
Paper 2 reading might not be the best way to proceed, because even I am trying to find an alternative for it.
Hope the answer helps in your preparation 🙂
